Hiring activity related to artificial intelligence increased by a CAGR of 3% in the packaging industry since 2020

The global packaging industry witnessed a 3% rise in compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in new job postings related to artificial intelligence since 2020, according to GlobalData's Job Analytics database. New job postings increased by 55% year-on-year in 2021 and decreased by 31% year-on-year in 2022. 

Notably, production occupations jobs accounted for 28% share of the global packaging industry’s artificial intelligence-related new job postings since 2020. 

Production occupations drive artificial intelligence-related hiring activity  

Production occupations, with a share of 28%, emerged as the top artificial intelligence-related job roles within the packaging industry since 2020, with new job postings rising by 16% year-on-year in 2021 and falling by 59% year-on-year in 2022. 

Computer and mathematical occupations came in second with a share of 24%, with new job postings rising by 61% year-on-year in 2021 and by 16% year-on-year in 2022.  

The other prominent artificial intelligence roles include architecture and engineering occupations (10% share), and protective service occupations (9% share).  

The top five companies in the packaging industry accounted for 86% of hiring activity 

The top five companies, in terms of the number of new job postings tracked by GlobalData, since 2020 were Ball, CKS Packaging, Avery Dennison, International Paper, and Tetra Laval International. Together they accounted for a combined share of 86% of all artificial intelligence-related new jobs in the packaging industry.

Ball posted 1,258 artificial intelligence-related jobs since 2020, followed by CKS Packaging with 833 jobs, and Avery Dennison with 154 jobs, according to GlobalData’s Job Analytics database. 

New job postings by Ball increased by 84% year-on-year in 2021 and decreased by 47% year-on-year in 2022, while those by CKS Packaging increased by 22% in 2021 and decreased by 80% in 2022. 

Hiring activity was driven by the US with an 81% share of total new job postings since 2020  

The largest share of artificial intelligence-related new job postings in the packaging industry since 2020 was in the US with 81%, followed by Italy (4%) and Brazil (2%). The share represented by the US decreased by 15 percentage points from 87% in 2021 to 72% in 2022.
