Hiring activity related to cybersecurity increased by a CAGR of 24% in the packaging industry since 2020

The global packaging industry witnessed a 24% rise in compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in new job postings related to cybersecurity since 2020, according to GlobalData's Job Analytics database. New job postings increased by 86% year-on-year in 2021 and decreased by 18% year-on-year in 2022.  

Notably, computer and mathematical occupations jobs accounted for 42% share of the global packaging industry’s cybersecurity-related new job postings since 2020.  

Computer and mathematical occupations drive cybersecurity-related hiring activity

Computer and mathematical occupations, with a share of 42%, emerged as the top cybersecurity-related job roles within the packaging industry since 2020, with new job postings rising by 106% year-on-year in 2021 and falling by 43% year-on-year in 2022.  

Management occupations came in second with a share of 14%, with new job postings rising by 98% year-on-year in 2021 and by 2% year-on-year in 2022.  

The other prominent cybersecurity roles include business and financial operations occupations (10% share), and architecture and engineering occupations (8% share).

The top five companies in the packaging industry accounted for 72% of hiring activity

The top five companies, in terms of the number of new job postings tracked by GlobalData, since 2020 were Ball, Ardagh Group, CKS Packaging, Avery Dennison, and Domtar. Together they accounted for a combined share of 72% of all cybersecurity-related new jobs in the packaging industry.  

Ball posted 878 cybersecurity-related jobs since 2020, followed by Ardagh Group with 123 jobs, and CKS Packaging with 99 jobs, according to GlobalData’s Job Analytics database.  

New job postings by Ball increased by 122% year-on-year in 2021 and decreased by 47% year-on-year in 2022, while those by Ardagh Group increased by 275% in 2021 and by 47% in 2022.  

Hiring activity was driven by the US with a 74% share of total new job postings since 2020

The largest share of cybersecurity-related new job postings in the packaging industry since 2020 was in the US with 74%, followed by the UK (4%) and Canada (3%). The share represented by the US decreased by 11 percentage points from 79% in 2021 to 68% in 2022.
