Patent applications related to cybersecurity decreased by 13% per year on average in the packaging industry since 2020

The global packaging industry experienced a 13% decrease in annual average growth rate (AAGR) in the number of cybersecurity-related patent applications between 2020 and 2022. The total number of cybersecurity-related grants increased by an AAGR of 4% during the same period, according to GlobalData's patent analytics database.  

Notably, the number of cybersecurity-related patent applications in the packaging industry was 392 since 2020, while 350 applications were granted. 

The top five companies by filings accounted for 33% of patent applications

Analysis of patent applications by assignee shows that FedEx filed the most cybersecurity patents within the packaging industry since 2020. The company filed 41 cybersecurity-related patents since 2020.  

It was followed by Becton Dickinson (12 applications), MyOmega Systems (10 applications), Apple (9 applications) Ishida (9 applications), and Tetra Laval International (9 applications). 

The top five companies by grants accounted for 39% of successful patent grants 

Analysis of patent grants by assignee shows that FedEx was granted 36 patents related to cybersecurity within the packaging industry since 2020. It was followed by Viatris (13 grants), O-I Glass Inc (11 grants), Walmart (8 grants), Dosentrx (5 grants), and INTECH Construction (5 grants).

Patent activity was driven by the US with a 45% share of total patent publications 

The largest share of cybersecurity-related patent publications in the packaging industry since 2020 was held by the US with 45%, followed by China (28%) and Japan (5%).
